The Heart of Therapeutic Horseback Riding -- The Session

Riding sessions for our riders are a unique form of therapy.  Each person brings a different set of needs.  The riding instructor is sensitive to the special needs these individuals bring and is knowledgeable about their disabilities.  Therefore, the content and goals vary depending upon the type and extent of the disability.  The outcome of each session is evaluated and documented in writing.

At New Heights, instructors design and monitor individualized lesson plans for each rider to address their physical, emotional and social needs.  Some can also learn the skills of horseback riding. Individual and class goals are to encourage each rider to be the best he or she can be, on and off the horse.

Therapy is often easier when on a horse.  Most of our riders do physical therapy routines at home on a mat.  However parents often tell us that the child's patience and concentration are usually in short supply.  Since the rider is normally more at ease and enjoys the experience more on horseback, a far more productive effort is realized.  The horseback riding distracts the rider's attention from the exercises, easing their resistance and allowing more progress.  Horseback riding also enables exercises not possible on the a mat.

Benefits of therapeutic horseback riding

Physical - the three-dimensional motion of the horse provides the rider hip and back action that simulates natural walking.  Riding relaxes and strengthens muscles and improves body tone, posture, balance, joint mobility and coordination.

Emotional - Contact with horses and horsemanship training provides a noncompetitive setting for learning.  New abilities, self-discipline and improved concentration build self-confidence.

Social - Horseback riding nurtures a positive self-image.  Riders may, for the first time in their lives, experience some independence and a sense of being part of a team.

Therapeutic horseback riding has a different effect for each person.  To a person who uses a wheelchair, it offers unique experiences possible only while riding a horse, such as free access and mobility.  It provides a new sensory experience -- looking down at other people instead of always looking up.  It means having control of four strong legs, and on those legs going places that a wheelchair could not go.  The riding instructor teaches the skills needed to ride, but obviously much more is taught.  Along with physical therapy, mental and spiritual growth and self-esteem are all achieved through therapeutic horseback riding.

In addition to the therapeutic benefits, riders gain a skill they can enjoy for life.  Horseback riding is an activity from which people can learn and get a great sense of satisfaction.  Some riders continue to ride throughout their lives and can even participate in shows and other competitive events.
